Why Your Furnace May Be Making These Noises

November 23, 2016

Now is when people start turning on their furnaces to settle in for a long winter. Unfortunately, when some furnaces start up, especially if it hasn’t undergone a seasonal heating tune-up, there are some troubles that need to be inspected. A major problem you may encounter is your furnace making funny noises – take a look at these furnace noises you should never disregard.

Scraping Sound

If you hear a loud scratching noise that sounds like metal on metal, there is possibly something faulty with the blower wheel. If you hear something like this, shut off your furnace ASAP and call Bob Brown Service Experts to inspect the furnace. There are a few things that could be wrong with the blower wheel. First, it may just be loose and if the piece is not too impaired, can be tightened. Second, it could be that the blower wheel is broken and will require replacement. Or third, it may be that the motor mount actually broke, causing the entire blower assembly to shake uncontrollably. One of our service professionals would be happy to come over and take a look, and get you back to the silent and warm home you have come to expect.

Loud Bang When Furnace Starts

If there is a loud bang when your furnace kicks on, there are a few things that could be occurring. Two common things are a dirty furnace burner or ignitor. Stretching and contracting air ducts can also produce loud bangs after the heating system blower starts up. A filthy furnace burner or ignitor could delay the burners from igniting, forcing gas to build up. When the gas finally does ignite, it will create the loud boom you hear. This could result in a safety issue, especially if one of these small explosions caused the heat exchanger to break. Not only could that produce a carbon monoxide leak, but you’d end up having to replace the heat exchanger, which can be very pricey.

The other trouble, stretching and contracting air ducts, is a common noise complaint for people with metal ducts. If your furnace is making the loud boom and it is caused by your air ducts, it could be a symptom of undersized ducts, blocked vents, or a clogged air filter. Bob Brown Service Experts is happy to come out to diagnose your trouble and get your home back in shape for the winter. Ultimately, this will also result in improved comfort as well.

Whining Noise

If you hear a whining noise, it could be the blower motor is malfunctioning, the shaft bearings are in need of oil, or an issue with the blower belt. An annual heating tune-up will help discover these issues before they become major problems so make sure you give us a call at 623-243-4517 and we’ll make sure your heating equipment is ready to keep you safe and comfortable all winter long.
