Why Your Furnace Could be Blowing Cold Air

October 21, 2016

You notice your heating system kick on and you’re expecting a comfortable blast of warm air, but instead all you get is cool air blowing. That’s not preferable in freezing temperatures!

There are a few reasons why your heating system could be blowing cold air. Bob Brown Service Experts is here with a few of them to help you locate the issue.

  • Thermostat

It may seem silly, but the thermostat is the first thing you want to look at. It’s the starting point for any heating technician, too. Make sure the system is set to “auto instead of “on.” If the thermostat is set to “on” then your heating system will blow continually, even when it isn’t heating the air being produced, thus blasting cold air. Changing it to “auto” will make sure the furnace only blows when it’s really heating the air to keep your home warm and comfy.

  • Air Filter

Most air filters need to be changed once a month to keep them from growing dirty and clogged. If your filters aren’t replaced often enough, the dirty air filter may restrict airflow into your heating equipment. If this occurs, it can overheat your system, causing the equipment to stop heating as a safety precaution.

  • Duct Work

If your duct work has leaks, connection issues, or was not designed correctly, it could permit warm air from the heating equipment to escape out. This would not only cause your furnace to give off cold air, it could significantly run up your heating bills since your heating equipment is heating non-living space, and will have to work overtime to keep your home comfortable.
